Yeah, im 36 and sometimes I still resent my mother's comstant efforts to force me to talk to people, and look them in the eye, and speak up, LordofWithywoods, and forcing me into uncomfortable social situations, but I also see now that she was teaching me social skills.
Would I have been more comfortable not coming down when guests were over? Probably. But it helped teach social graces. It was training.
Sometimes, school and and training aren't fun but you just have to do it to advance as a person. It's how you get better at things.
I use my social skills to make a living now so it turned out to be valuable training indeed even if I didn't enjoy it.

I mean, I love guilt free gaming as much as the next guy, but this seems a little over the top in pandering to an unrealistic expectation.
