I'm a wildlife photographer. When I posted this picture a lot of people commented they had no idea that deer shed their antlers every year. Well, this is what it looks like.

Deer, after their mating season (known as the rut) will go through hormonal changes which cause them to shed their antlers. It's a completely natural process that causes no harm or pain to the deer. Within a few months, the deer start growing a new set of antlers. Antlers are some of the fastest growing tissue in the animal kingdom, with deer being able to grow upwards of 1in of antler each day.

Antlers = shed each year

Horns = are not shed

Antlers examples: white tailed deer, mule deer, elk, moose

Horns examples: bighorn sheep, pronghorn, goats, cattle, trombone, tuba
