I met a WWII POW named Fiske Hanley II with a story that was the opposite of this. He was almost 95 when I did. Here’s a link to his recent obituary
He told me he was shot down over Japan on a bombing run in late March of 1945. He was the only survivor from 8 in his plane. They took him prisoner for something like 8 months until the end of the war. He went in 175lbs and left at 96lbs. Lost part of his ear. Shrapnel in his leg till he died. The crazy part is he gets back to the US, goes to work at Lockheed Martin(aerospace company) and 15-20 years goes by. One day he gets introduced to a new coworker. He’s a young Japanese guy. They strike up a conversation and eventually the topic of where he grew up comes up. The new guy says a city name and it was the city Fiske had bombed that fateful night. The new guy told him his parents were killed during bombings and Fiske asked what day. It was that day. Fiske felt horrible and admitted to the guy that he had flown the bomber that dropped those bombs. The new guy forgave him and they remained friends for life.
He also told me in 2015 that he had been invited to the 2020 Olympics in Japan and was planning on going as long as he was still as healthy as he was. We all know the olympics were delayed due to covid and Fiske passed away in August of 2020. He would’ve made it had it not been postponed. RIP Fiske
