I had a college algebra teacher who allowed me to take any test or quiz over as many times as I wanted to get the grade I could live with. The questions were different but same material. He wanted me to learn the material, not just earn a grade. Now, 30 years later, I still remember most of what he taught me.

Most teachers don’t do that because A: it’s too much work and B: they have 35 kids in the f-Ing classroom and spend most of the time disciplining the 20 who don’t want to be there!!!

I fully agree with the ability to retake tests until you prove you have mastered the content. I’m not so sure about enforcing the idea that missing deadlines doesn’t come with consequences.

Been teaching 22 years. We’ve had a retake policy for many years. Most students are happy with their grade and have no desire to retake something.

If they decide to retake something, students figure out quick that you have to actually learn the material to do better on the retake. Once they figure this out, they stop retaking things.

From what I’ve witnessed, there’s no harm in letting students retake stuff. However in a high school setting with 150+ students and too much content to teach, makes retaking things very difficult.
