(CNN) People who have been fully vaccinated against coronavirus -- right now that means with two doses of either the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna vaccine -- can skip quarantine if they are exposed to someone infected with the virus, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday.

That doesn't mean they should stop taking precautions, the CDC noted in updated guidance. It's just not necessary for them to quarantine.

"Fully vaccinated persons who meet criteria will no longer be required to quarantine following an exposure to someone with COVID-19," the CDC said in updates to its web page with guidance on vaccination.

"Vaccinated persons with an exposure to someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 are not required to quarantine if they meet all of the following criteria," the CDC added.

The criteria: They must be fully vaccinated -- having had both shots with at least two weeks having passed since the second shot. That's because it takes two weeks to build full immunity after the second dose of vaccine.

I understand that we don't know if the vaccine lasts more than 3 months simply because we don't have that data at this point. That said, this is beyond frustrating. It's now been over a month since I had my second vaccine. Most people in the US have not been vaccinated yet. If the vaccine truly only is effective that short of a period, at the slow rate we're vaccinating, we will never have the critical mass necessary to get a legitimate herd immunity.

That said, all of the trends right now are extremely promising and there is also no evidence that vaccine immunity doesn't last, so there really isn't much point in borrowing trouble.

This is the most contradictory article I have ever read. Which is it, can you still spread the virus if you have the vaccine or can you not bc this article basically says you dont need to quarantine if you come in contact with a covid + person which has to mean you are unable to spread it but later goes on to say you might harbor the virus in your nose and other areas of the body

But the CDC says protection may wear off after three months, so people who had their last shot three months ago or more should still quarantine if they are exposed.

Wait wtf. Did I miss this?

Edit: i checked around CDC and academic sites. There’s no other mention of it lasting only three months. Just that we don’t know yet. Seems that guesses are for at least a year. This is very poor reporting on CNN’s part.

Edit 2: cnn updated the article. “But the CDC says it's not known how long protection lasts, so people who had their last shot three months ago or more should still quarantine if they are exposed.”

That’s better.
