Unfortunately, America conceptualizes wage as some reward for how much a person is contributing to society or the economy or whatever. We've got this weird narrative that at least some, if not all, poor people deserve to be poor and must function as an implicit warning to the middle class.
If you don't want people to qualify for welfare which YOU pay for, then demand that companies pay living wages.
Seems pretty simple but some people are so blinded by the idea of hurting those they don't like that they don't mind hurting themselves at the same time.
