My girlfriend and I have done this several times, in a way more innocent way. We live about an hour and 15 or 30 from our parents, where we grew up. There have been multiple times where we are visiting family, and we literally pass eachother on the highway and then get the phone call. We've since been better about texting/calling before we go places, but we visit home a lot and are both pretty okay without our technology bugging us...so its made for some mistakes.
Can confirm this was 100% real, I was the idiot in the post who got trapped in Paris for a night. Salma was kind enough to buy me a hotel by the airport and now we're living together 4 years later.
