On the kimono thing I've heard from Japanese people that a non Japanese person wearing a Kimono if it's done seriously is something they actually enjoy.
Avatar the last airbender comics show this well. Aang is totally cool with the acolytes wearing the garb of the airbenders as its appreciating his culture but when they show him they have tattoos he gets angry because they are a sacred rite reserved only for master airbenders
