This is a good point, but elected officials are usually not disqualified by failing to pass a background for a security clearance (look at half the trump family) or even felonies for many elected positions.
But in several states - they can be barred from even running if they don't believe in god. *edit - While SCOTUS said this can't be enforced, it's still a bullshit old law on the books showing religious discrimination remains codified in our laws.
Also - you have to be careful who makes those considerations.
If being a terrorist organization meant you were banned from federal office, that would have been a real problem in the Civil Rights Era. How 'bout McCarthyism? If someone accuses you of being a pinko, should you be banned from voting on policies regarding policing political organizations?
