Just so everyone knows. If both lights go out and it's not the fuse, the most likely cause (specially in an old car) is the rubber grommet on the pedal.

The pedal has a button that is pressed when the pedal is in the rest position which interrupts the circuit. When you press the pedal the button or "switch" is activated. The thing pressing the button is a tiny rubber grommet that fits on a hole. This tiny rubber plug tends to crack and disintegrate with time. It's an easy fix if you simply glue something over the whole or stick something in there like a piece of paper or cardboard.
