I knew a girl who was a sign language expert although her hearing was fully functional. She said that she hoped when she had a child it would be born deaf, and that being dead was not a handicap. I mean I agree that someone born without the ability to hear is not unable to live a full and happy life, but to wish your children to be born without an ability that most people have, and rely on to stay safe and aware in many situations, is just ridiculous to me.
Edit: deaf, not dead. Being dead is almost always a handicap.

one of my roommates genuinely thinks like this. blows my mind. from their point of view, this would be ableist somehow.
