All the negative stuff people are saying about voluntourism and evangelical work in this thread is true. But Iā€™d like to address the part of the comment about fixing your own home.

Are yā€™all familiar with the Bible phrase ā€œFirst, remove the beam out of your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck out of your brotherā€™s eye?ā€ Itā€™s much easier to see a problem that doesnā€™t directly impact you than one that does. People slowly get used to how things are locally, no matter how bad, until those things are ā€˜normalā€™ and not worth paying attention to. They become blind to it. Itā€™s far easier to then see small things wrong elsewhere and want to fix them than to step back and see the problems in their own backyard.

Thatā€™s a massive problem because people in the backyard of America need help just as much as anybody else. But the problem has to be so much bigger to even get noticed.

Edit: a word

If you zoom out enough, Africa is our neighbors too.
