I’m a middle-aged Christian who believes all people are created by God in his image and are worthy of love. My sense of morality matches scripture’s description of how people with love in their hearts behave. And I was spiritually born again through a process of loathing my hateful heart, asking for the blood of the Passover Lamb, his son Yeshua, to reconcile myself to God, asking God to put the old me to death in baptism, and resurrect me a new man with a new heart of love, partaking of the nature and Spirit of the Father. This is true Christian theology and my spiritual journey in a nutshell. I do not judge people who don’t share my faith or experience. I would literally take a bullet for anyone on this earth, Christian or not.
I am deeply concerned that people who also call themselves Christians, who claim to follow the teachings of a Messiah who commanded us to love our enemies, turn the other cheek, loathe worldly riches, and care for the poor, have become a murderous mob who believe Donald Trump, of all people, is their savior. This is not Christianity. This is a new religion I’ll call Mericanity. Their Bible is the constitution. Their apostles are the founding fathers. Their goddess is lady liberty holding an assault rifle and saying “come and take it”. Their “Jesus” is a whitewashed blue eyed man who will come reward them with heaven one day for their patriotism.
As I try to decipher how the conservative right have become extremist nationalists, I think back to my elementary school. Every day we pledged our allegiance to a flag under God. The military came every year and showed patriotic films in the library. We were fed a steady diet of Hollywood films glorifying war for our God, country, and freedom. We were taught by church leaders, Christian school curriculums, and Christian media that the USA is a Christian nation, favored by God. It’s no wonder people are deceived so easily by someone like Trump who tells them their country, ideals, and religion are under attack by atheistic or satanic leftists. These people have been programmed their entire lives for this moment. They see this as a righteous crusade against evil.
Anyone who spends five minutes reading the actual words of Christ should be able to see he would not condone the hatred and violence of the right, nor their worship of Trump. And believe me, there will be no assault rifles, no four wheel drive trucks, no American flags, and no Christmas trees in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Canon Jesus is awesome. Fanon Jesus is the problem.

Not a Christian, but I can totally get behind this, if it's truly meant.
