Got out of prison myself a little over 2 years ago. Got a job working in a warehouse making 10.21 an hour with no benefits and mandatory overtime. Now to this day i still work for the same company, making $17.11 an hour, i have a decently well funded 401k, my own spot to lay my head and and all the Newports and Maryjane I could ask for. Soon your time will just be a bad memory my g, trust me.
Edit: okay so 1700 upvotes later and I had no idea so many people would even care about what I had to say, let alone react like this! It's kind of blowing me away! I actually just made a reddit recently and it would be pretty cool if my following blew up too not gonna lie
I got out of prison almost three years ago after doing a six year stretch, at the age of twenty-six. I had zero job skills, and started off at a Wing Stop a week or so after I got out. I wasn’t getting enough hours so I started working day labor, riding a bicycle to the labor hall every morning for a minimum wage job that would guarantee me eight hours a day. Eventually a buddy got me on with a utility contractor for $12/hr as a laborer, digging holes and such, until I was able to work my way onto some of the heavy equipment. I saved up enough for a car, and once I got proficient enough at the equipment, applied to a bigger utility company, and was hired at $24/hr. I’ve worked my way up a bit higher now, and obtained a class A CDL to make myself even more valuable in this career.
I was fortunate enough to improve my lot in life, through hard work and a bit of luck. Everyone’s situation isn’t the same, but I think that in general, showing determination and perseverance towards achieving success is the only way you can get there. Step by step, incremental increases, eventually add up.
