The previous people verified to have reached age 118 are Jeanne Calment (in 1993) and Sarah Knauss (in 1998).

She was born in Fukuoka, Japan. Her son fought in World War II and was a POW held by the Soviets in Siberia before being released, also making her one of the last living parents of a World War II veteran. She survived pancreatic cancer at age 45. She sold rice cakes, and retired in 1966. She continues to be in good health and her hobbies include calligraphy and board games and has set a goal of reaching age 120.
