I play the bagpipes, and when I lived in apartments I would find a nearby park to practice in. A few years ago, when I was living in a town with a large university, I walked down to a park with my pipes to practice. The picnic shelter where I normally played was full of people, so I set up under a tree at the other side of the park. Soon after I started playing a man from the gathering walked over, and I assumed he was going to ask me to stop playing because it was bothering them. Exact opposite as it turns out- he told me that they were celebrating Eid, explained that it was the end of the daylight fasting during Ramadan, and invited me to come eat with them. They were mostly faculty and students at the university, and we're gathering with their families to celebrate. It was really neat to be so warmly and genuinely welcomed into their community as a complete stranger, and a reminder that we all share a common bond as humans. Oh, and the food was delicious!

Whenever a young child says hi to me I always say it back. Even if its the third time on the walk from the house to the car, I always say it.
