Similar has happened to me before many times working in the service industry, so I'm numb to it. Whenever someone complains about having to pay an tiny extra amount of change due to sales tax or whatever, if I have it I will take it out of my pocket and say something like "Oh no worries, I will take care of it!" And they always immediately snap back with some snarky comment about how they can afford it. Killing em with kindness is the only way to survive in the service industry.
