I work in a surgery recovery room, and one of the many things we do is call our patients from the day before. Check in, see if they’re getting around ok, answer questions, etc. usually about a 5 minute call. We had a big lull in the schedule, so I was doing my calls. An older lady I called was so thrilled someone was calling HER. I was on the phone more than 45 minutes just chatting, why not? She was lonely and I didn’t have anything more important to do than make sure my patient was healthy and happy. Got home and called my grandma that night. If it’s been a while since you last spoke to your elderly loved ones, please do it!
My grandfather would always call me and lead off with a question about sports. This was weird because he would quickly go into something else and had no real interest in or knowledge of sports.
Took me years later to realize he just wanted to talk about anything and he knew I liked sports and that was his way in. Would love to be able to chat with him again about anything.
