This is the Fornax cluster of galaxies, with NGC1365 on one end and the huge elliptical NGC1399 at the centre of the cluster on the far right. In 1998 I spent 12 days at the Las Campanas Schmidt 1m telescope in Chile doing 600s frames, later stacked, to reveal the low surface brightness (LSB) extend of the cluster (and looking for the mass distribution and dark matter) for my PhD.

I can tell you, my data did not look anywhere near as good as this. Amazing work. Most of these galaxies are cluster members, and there are at least another 1000 of them that are LSB. Amazing work!

Very cool. Seeing shots like this boggles my mind, as Mr Adams wrote "Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space."
