Disney Plus is increasing its price to $8 a month starting in March 2021

Disney Plus is following Netflix and introducing a $1 price hike for subscribers in the United States, raising it to $7.99 a month.

The move comes after a lengthy presentation showing what Disney is bringing to Disney Plus in the next year. The price hike will begin on March 26, 2021, coming in at $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year. Also, the Disney bundle — that has Disney Plus, Hulu, and ESPN Plus — will see a $1 increase to $13.99 a month.

As the company invests in content, the company has to raise prices to recoup that expense. This is the first time that Disney Plus has received a price hike. It arrives just a couple of months after Netflix announced it was increasing prices for subscribers in the United States, including raising its most popular plan from $13 to $14 a month.

Although it seems early for a Disney Plus hike, the announcement comes in a flurry of other announcements over TV shows and movies heading to Disney Plus. The more that Disney spends on content for its service, the more revenue Disney needs to invest. When Netflix’s chief operating officer and chief product officer, Greg Peters, was asked about price hikes, he said Netflix will “occasionally go back and ask [customers] to pay a little bit more to keep that virtuous cycle of investment and value creation going.” Disney is now doing the same thing.

It’s unclear if price hikes are coming to Disney Plus subscribers in other countries or if this will affect the bundle.

For non-US subscribers, as of Feb 23:

Canada: $11.99/month or $119.99/annual Australia: $11.99/month or $119.99/annual New Zealand: $12.99/month or $129.99/annual UK: £7.99/month or £79.90/annual Euro: 8.99/month or 89.90/annual Norway: 89.00kr/month or 890.00kr/annual Denmark: 79.00kr/month or 790.00kr/annual Sweden: 89.00 kr/month or 890.00 kr/annual Switzerland: CHF12.90/month or CHF129.00/annual Singapore: $11.98/month or $119.98/annual

Edit: For those that are unaware, along with this price increase most of these markets will get the addition of Star, a new tier in Disney+ (for no extra charge) that will house mature 18+ content from Disney’s other brands, including 20th Century Studios, Searchlight, FX, ESPN, ABC and Freeform (and can also include old Fox and Touchstone content). This should bring least 1000 additional titles in just the first year: https://www.theverge.com/2020/12/10/22165950/disney-star-streaming-service-hotstar-international-movies-tv

Knew this was inevitable, probably will increase again after they actually release all their new shows.
