Did they refuse to serve Eru or Manwe? I seem to remember it being something like even Morgoth's "discord" of the music was part of Eru's plan.

Fun fact: 666 is not the number of Satan. It's the number of "The Beast", which is another evil creature in the bible, and is probably a metaphor for the Roman Empire that ostracized christians and especially emperor Nero.
