In a multi party election under American rules, it's possible to win ZERO counties and still win the election, perhaps even in a landslide. You would just need an environment in which the winning party runs a strong second everywhere, while the other parties take turns either barely winning a county, or else getting blown out.
I see nobody has put a link to CGP Grey's video on this. His math is based on Electoral College votes and suggests you could win the Presidency with only 22% of the popular vote or just over 50million. The whole video is a good watch and very informative.
