I teach 5th grade online and half my kids are home alone or the oldest at the house. Half a dozen of them have to excuse themselves to care for their siblings or cousins regularly. These poor kids are struggling too
My mom was a single mother. My brothers are 10 and 12 years younger than me. When I was old enough, about 15, I was the one watching them all the time. I was practically their father, and when I would take them out to the park at the ripe old age of 18 I would get asked if they were my kids. I had a job for a little bit when I was 17/18, but didn’t work much because I felt so obligated to take care of my brothers.

I am 10 years older than my sister and my extended family even recognizes that I straight up raised my sister.
Now I’m a teacher and my heart breaks for some of my students. Been there and it sucks.
