I worked retail. For seasons like Black Friday they actually hire more cashiers & pull people from the floor when it gets crazy. Also, sometimes registers break (I broke 2 in one day once) so you need more than you’re using. There were a few times we used all of them however that normally didn’t happen for longer than a few minutes when the lines died down again. It was normally finding people who could put down what they were doing and walk all the way to the front that lead to the two cashiers with huge lines situation. Edit: also a lot of times the crazy lines is like 2% of the day (although it doesn’t seem that way when you get stuck in them) so if they had more cashiers, they would be incredibly over staffed most of the day. Assuming they could find that many people willing to be cashiers, which someone who liked being a cashier seemed rare. Be nice to your cashiers y’all, None of that is their choice & if they quit that’s one less cashier.
