Thousands Of Fans Sign Petition To Remake 'Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic'

It is a truth universally acknowledged that the continued lack of new Knights Of The Old Republic content in our lives is nothing short of criminal. Way back in 2003, Mass Effect studio BioWare made a sprawling, epic RPG based on Star Wars but set thousands of years before the events of the movies. It. Was. Amazing.

Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic and its 2004 sequel were everything fans had been wanting in a Star Wars game. It explored entirely new territory, fleshing out the lore and universe instead of rehashing the same Skywalker-era we're so used to. It made it so that your choices mattered as you felt yourself pulled towards the light or dark side of the Force. And the plot twists? Oh man, I have no desire to spoil the game for you no matter how old it is... just trust me when I say KOTOR does not pull any punches.

So where in the effin' heck is our third instalment? Where is our next-gen remake? It's been pointed out in the past that the KOTOR games were published by the now-defunct LucasArts - thanks for that, Disney. But guess who currently holds the licensing rights to publish Star Wars games and also owns the studio that created the original KOTOR? EA. EA has the power... doesn't it?

We may never see a new KOTOR greenlit, sadly. But that hasn't stopped the fans from trying. A petition created earlier this summer to remake the first game now has over 4,000 signatures and is still going strong.

"In July of 2023, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic will turn 20," the petition reads. "Yes, you heard right. Knights of the Old Republic will be celebrating it's 20th Anniversary in just a few years time. The perfect time to release a remake of this classic game.

"Please, leave the story as it is. Everything else though, can be built from the ground up. Game engines and graphics have came a long way since the early 2000s. Knights of the Old Republic's game engine was the Odyssey engine, since 2013 all games BioWare have developed made on EA DICE's Frostbite 3 engine. So imagine how a remake might look."
