The janitor in my school is great. He’s from Poland and his English isn’t great but all the students just love him. He gives everyone passing him a high five and is always in such a good mood. Although I must say you don’t know true pain until you go for a high five and he pulls his hand away and says in his amazing accent “haha gotchu”
I have a Coworker who transferred to my work from another state. She’s speaks very little English, and I speak very little Spanish. She always looked so depressed and unhappy at work. I took the effort to learn a few words and to use google translate to try to talk to her. I started with just a hello every day then a “hola, como estas”. Nobody else would even try to say hi in English. It took a lot of nerves for me to work up the courage because I’m a very introverted person and I always think ppl will judge me. Our shifts changed and now we only see eachother once a week or once a month, but every time we do she goes “hello friend!” I ask about her kids and how she’s doing. She excitedly shows me her cat or her kids on her phone, her daughter recently graduated from school and I loved seeing how excited she was to show me. A couple days ago I showed her an old house I want to buy and she went “ooooo” like a ghost, because she thought it was haunted, and we laughed over it. Actions and attempts can really affect people.
