Honestly that’s how my mom did it and I’m forever grateful. There wasn’t a bedtime really.. you just had to be in your room (there wasn’t a tv or device in my day) and you couldn’t bring in toys. It was either bed or read. I thought I was being rebellious by reading but eventually I’d conk out and she’d turn off my light and save my page.

In one of my most daring parenting moves, when my 8 year old asked if he could read his book I told him he had to pick up his room a little first.
I didn't care about the room, I wanted him to think reading was a reward and it worked. (with him, the other two just played Minecraft)

Quite the opposite for me. My parents were heavily Pentecostal and me getting caught reading Harry Potter at night resulted in a sever asswhooping.
