Not to be a jerk, but couldn’t he save the kid without wrecking the train and potentially killing everyone on it by just zooming in and lifting the kid off the track?
Seriously though hiding under a table/desk/in a doorframe/concrete basement is a great way to survive when you're between the "instant death" and "strong wind" zones. Imagine dying not because of the nuke itself but the shockwave dropping a bit of ceiling or a bookshelf on your head.
