You should watch the movie Spotlight on Netflix. I wouldn't call some of these podcasts journalism, but you can't deny the role of investigative journalism in some crimes.
Stuff like this for sure happens. The late Michelle McNamara obsessed over the Golden State Killer (she also helped coin that name for him) and the pressure she put on investigators to keep digging eventually led to his arrest. Her book is "I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer". She was an amazing person and journalist
