Thats an odd couple of sentences at the end there. "feeling cold and unsure he would survive"... Wait, was this an hour's long stand off with the polar bear? Was Bill injured? So many assumptions are required!
This happened years ago and he still skis kilometres every day during the winter and bikes even further over summer, the absolute tank
Edit: he’s also incredibly humble, never talks about this
Edit2: this post does a gross misjustice to what he did. He walked out of his house to face a bear currently mauling someone, hit it in the face with his shovel, and then ended up getting mauled himself in order to let the other person escape. The bear was chased off of him by another local in a truck, and he required facial surgery and lost an ear among other injuries.
Edit 3: I will also answer any questions you guys have about polar bears, it’s my duty as a local

For anybody who doesn't know, the polar bear is the largest land predator on Earth. Bigger than a Grizzly Bear.
And even a smaller black bear can rip a car door off of a car looking for food.
