I believe watching a documentary about him, he permed his hair as a way of saving money when he first started and was travelling the country doing painting classes as he couldn’t afford to have it cut often IIRC. Quite a fascinating story of how he got where he was.
Bob Ross spent 20 years in the air force, and was actually a drill sergeant. A mean one too. He eventually reached the rank of Master Sergeant, but, at a certain point he had enough of it and retired, and vowed to never yell again. He was so tired of the yelling and the acting mean and tough that he completely changed his behavior to be kind, loving, gentle, and soft spoken.
He actually took up painting during his time in the military, and used it to cope with the stress. He developed his technique of quick painting during the short breaks he was offered throughout the day.
