In the 70s the disability community took ownership of the word crippled and some people called themselves Crips for shock value and bringing attention to disability causes.
My uncle is mentally handicapped, born in 54. His birth certificate has MORON stamped on it. Crazy yo
Edit: I spoke to my mother. She said it wasn't on the original. Wasn't added until he was 11 or 12. I'd imagine not until they figured out he was actually handicapped.
