At my university there was a museum with a progression of skulls from grey wolf through different breeds of dog until pug and Pekingese. The wolf had an obvious larger brain cavity than all of the dogs, even the ones with large skulls. Dog brains are so small in comparison. One bizarre quirk of genetics is that the Pekingese dogs are genetically some of the closest to wolves, maybe because they are one of the oldest breeds.

I heard some badly bred pugs have the unpleasant possibility of the eyeball getting popped out easily or just falling out of the eyesocket.

I have a pug that I inherited from a passing relative and while personally I find her adorable, I know she deserved a better life not struggling to breathe. I’d never buy a pug now, but I’ll happily try to be the best owner for the one I’ve got.
