This is my sister on her post on Instagram: One in 20.000, like me. Different unique people with one thing in common. It is the 25th of October and that is #dwarfismawarenessday. As I like to call it #littlepeopleawarenessday. We celebrate to be different and spread awareness. Now more than ever I feel the urge to tell my story not because I want to, but because I need to.

Do you ever feel stared at, like the whole world is watching you or do you sometimes think that people are taking a picture of you because you look funny? Are your clothes too big, because the world is not made for you? Are you being yelled at? Or are you being declined at jobs because some people underestimate you? That and many more is my reality, everyday, for 21 years.

I thought the hardest thing about being different would be accepting myself, but I found out that I could do that easily. It’s the world that has problems accepting me.

I’m a person, just like you. With hobbies, intelligence, work, humor and love. Not a lilliputter or midget. I’m a woman, student, daughter and friend. You can call me Roos. And if you want to describe me use the word little.

My point is: I don’t want your sympathy, I’m just looking for recognition. And I think it’s time to spread some more love into this world. We need to accept, respect, help and love each other.

It doesn’t take long to turn that stare into a smile. It doesn’t take long to tell your friends it’s not okay to laugh at someone. It doesn’t take long to educate your children by telling them there are also different or small people on this planet.

So the next time when you see someone walking by: think of which part of their day do you want to be?

Wow...1 in 20,000 is actually way more prevalent than I would have thought. Where are all you guys?

Quite frankly, I have become aware because of this post.

I am a significantly shorter than average man, although by no means comparable to someone with dwarfism, and I have to deal with people being jerks about it. Little people must have it 1000 times worse! They have my sympathy and respect.

My wife has an enormous crush on Peter Dinklage, by the way. :)
