This, weirdly, reminds me of my dad. He worked in a factory making car batteries. Workers there wore polyester uniforms supplied by the company, but with their own underwear. My dad was a cotton tighty whities guy. The sulfuric acid vapor in the air would penetrate his clothes, and then it would only take a few weeks of wear and wash cycles until his briefs would begin to disintegrate in the washing machine. His rule was he'd only replace them when the elastic band became so poorly attached it wouldn't hold the rest of the fabric in place anymore.
