It's first-past-the-post voting. And since that's the status quo and changing it would require cooperation of the two parties, it's very difficult to change.
EDIT: I'm being informed that there are other aspects than just FPTP that are bad. I agree. But FPTP is one of them.
We need more ranked choice voting! Here in Maine we're using it for the entire election, presidential included. Feels amazing to vote third party without feeling like you're throwing your vote away. Almost like heroin.
