Reminds me of when I was 7-ish and the worksheet I was doing had one of those "Jim and Dan are playing a game of golf, add up their scores over several holes and then write down the winner"
So I did, and got it wrong. And then I did it again, and got it wrong. And then I did it again, and the teacher went through the question with me and we realised that I had no idea that lowest score wins in golf (because how would I, I was a seven year-old kid from the inner city?).
But if the teacher hadn't been mindlessly ticking in the first place, then I wouldn't still remember this.

Same issue with standardized testing. Apparently a* b =/= b* a even though that’s like one of the main rules in arithmetic.
