Prior to last week, the Lakers hadn’t won an NBA title since Ron Artest delivered a clutch 3-pointer in Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals.
When LeBron James helped the Lakers win their record-tying 17th NBA championship, the former St. John’s star — now known as Metta Sandiford-Artest — felt another high.
“I was just home and sparked a blunt,” Sandiford-Artest — most recently known as Metta World Peace before changing his name again after marrying Maya Sandiford — told USA TODAY Sports. “I was partying the whole day by myself with two or three close friends. We sparked — I don’t even know — maybe 10 blunts. We had a great time. I deserved it. The Lakers won. It was crazy. It felt like I won.
“I try not to indulge like I used to when I could go out, but I had a really good time in the house.”
Unlike when the former Lakers forward surprised even himself by hitting the most important shot of the 2010 NBA Finals — “[Kobe] passed me the ball. He never passes me the ball,” Artest said after that game — the 40-year-old knew he would celebrate a Lakers title this year.
“It wasn’t surprising. I knew LeBron was going to win,” Sandiford-Artest said. “He definitely is destined to win a title. But I was watching. It was like a movie that you knew what was happening.”
