My dad died when I was in college the week before finals and his funeral was on the same day as a couple of my tests. I will never forget how they each handled it. One professor made me take the make up exam the next morning which was horrible and I bombed it. One teacher responded similar to this and basically gave me the grade I had already with many kind words. It’s been years since that and it still impacts me.

I understand every professor can't always have this level of flexibility, but kindness like this being ridiculously rare is such a fucking tragedy. Bless this professor.

And I mean, what is the point of being so rigid and heartless? Are professors so hardened they forget what it is like to deal with hardship and loss? It is hard to fathom sometimes, but then again look at the times we live in.

I just started college in another state last year, and thankfully I was able to leave state to be with my mom when we found out she had cancer. She died five days after I got home, 7 days after I could no longer get a refund for classes.

I emailed all professors, promising to follow up with a death certificate or stuff from her funeral.

3 of them responded back they'd extend my work for two-four days and that I would need to catch up.

My u.s. History professor said "Oh hell no you tell me if you want to continue we can go to the deans together". I said I was out of state. "give me a good time to zoom you". He zoom called me from the deans office and not only helped me get refunds and pulled from the other three classes, he also worked with me on my final paper and personally saw to it to call me once every two weeks to check on my mental health.

I don't even remember the other professors, but this one professor made my grief a little easier by not pushing more onto me. It was amazing.
