IIRC he was standing on a dock and preparing to jump in when people from across the water started shouting to warn him. He apparently looked down, saw a baby gator in the water and yelled what he yelled before jumping in and being immediately attacked by the 11-footer the onlookers were trying to warn him about, which had been lurking underneath the dock.

Maybe he misread it as "non swimming alligators" and thought the safest place to be would be the water considering they couldn't swim
