IIRC he was standing on a dock and preparing to jump in when people from across the water started shouting to warn him. He apparently looked down, saw a baby gator in the water and yelled what he yelled before jumping in and being immediately attacked by the 11-footer the onlookers were trying to warn him about, which had been lurking underneath the dock.

One of my college classmates ignored the warnings about a violent river in Namibia and was promptly smashed up dead against rocks, due to the speed of the current.
