What if ocean water doesn't hurt them like flowing water, but they can't float , so they just sink to the bottom. Like their diet is extremely iron rich and they don't breath, so they can't swim. There are just tons of angry waterlogged vampires going crazy from fish blood or worse, just starving. The merfolk avoid the trenches because it is the only safe place where vampires can avoid the sun.
