Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health has been named the Federal Employee of the Year in the annual Service to America Medals, or Sammies.

Fauci “served as the government’s premier expert and spokesperson on infectious diseases during six presidencies, including taking a prominent role in seeking to protect the public from the highly contagious and deadly new coronavirus that swept through the country and the world in 2020,” in the words of the Partnership for Public Service, which presents the annual awards which are considered among the highest honors available to career federal employees.

The Paul A. Volcker Career Achievement Award also went to an NIH official, Dr. Ira Pastan, M.D., a distinguished investigator at the National Cancer Institute, for discovering “a new class of drugs that can successfully treat a rare form of leukemia and hold promise to be effective therapies for pancreatic and lung cancer as well as mesothelioma.”

The People’s Choice Award went to Corvelli A. McDaniel, assistant commissioner for revenue collections management, and Lorraine Cole, Ph.D., chief diversity and inclusion officer, at the Treasury Department for creating “an innovative program for large commercial financial institutions to provide management and technical assistance to help small and minority-owned banks strengthen their balance sheets and better serve low-income communities.”

Awesome. I'm sure when Dr. Fauci envisioned a pandemic, he thought he'd be working WITH the government and not AGAINST the government.

I think he might also be Times person of the year, unless Times decides to select a group again, in which case it'll probably be the protesters or healthcare workers.
