I don't know if this piece will resonate with anyone else like it does me. I first saw it in an exhibition in the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, Australia. It was part of an exhibition called The Popular Pets Show. Basically just depictions of pets by Australian artists. Amongst all the fun pictures of people's pets, was this self portrait by Jude, with her dog Tilly, an Australian Kelpie. There is just so much emotion in this painting, helped in no small way by the title. Perhaps without the title I may not have given it a second glance, but it was titled in this way, and boy has it stuck with me ever since. For me, this is one of the most memorable pieces of art I've ever seen.

Edit: if anyone is interested in what the rest of the works were, the full catalogue is here. Just click through to each artist to see the works that were displayed.

Love it. To me it conveys a sense of loss and aloneness without making the subject pathetic. Her stance and the action of painting contrast with the rain streaks, bleak room, and black clothing to make a sense of powerful resilience, maybe starting new but not really starting over.
