After seeing him breathing on the balcony it's definitely the first option. Anyone who thinks he faked that breathing as some genius plan drastically overestimates his intelligence.

To the guys saying it's because he's out of shape and went up some stairs: We've seen him go up stairs 100s of times and he has never breathed like that.

Unironically, the second half reminds me of that family guy episode where Carter has the cure cancer and cured himself, and refuses to give it out to anyone
