On October 5, 1985, Special Agent Robin L. Ahrens, who was assigned to the Phoenix FBI Office, was fatally wounded while participating with other agents in the apprehension of fugitive Kenneth Don Barrett. The fugitive was sought for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution for armed robbery. Special Agent Ahrens was fatally shot by other agents at the arrest scene who mistook her for an armed associate of the fugitive. Special Agent Ahrens was the first female special agent to be killed in the line of duty.

Special Agent Ahrens was born in May 1952 in St. Paul, Minnesota. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Utah State University in 1974, and a Media Specialist Degree from James Madison University in Virginia, she entered on duty as a special agent in 1984. Special Agent Ahrens completed her training in June 1985.

She was not even in the job for 1 year. She entered on duty as a special agent in 1984, completed her training in June 1985 and was killed on 5 October 1985.

I was going to say maybe the agents who shot her didn’t expect one of their own to be a woman but then the fact that she was the first female agent killed does not mean she was the only female agent on the force.

Special Agent Ahrens was fatally shot by other agents at the arrest scene who mistook her for an armed associate of the fugitive.

Maybe if they wore dark blue jackets with bright yellow "FBI" stitched on it?

Edit: There are some interesting development in this 35 year old story.

More Details from that time.

The accusations of a coverup.

… Not even six months on the job. What a shame!
