I attended an organ procurement during my nursing school rotation. The amount of respect the team showed the donor and their family was remarkable. The team even read a little "thank you" speach out loud in the OR before starting the surgery that included words from the family. It was touching and highlighted the wonderful gift this donor was able to give. I felt so priveledged to be a part of the patient's final moments. I'm in the US.

There was a boy from a town near where I was born who was on vacation in Italy with his parents. Some idiot mafia shitheads mistook the family for jewelers and shot into the car, killing the boy. The family donated his organs which saved five local lives.

Italy had one of the lowest organ donor rates but because of the boy's family's generosity, organ donation rates increased significantly.

Nicholas Green.

Edit: removed "religious reasons" because it was just a supposition and not really relevant anyway.
