This misstates the scientific method, either deliberately or innocently. Yes, scientists carry out experiments to test a hypothesis. The result of the experiment is then carried out by other scientists, who try to replicate the original scientist’s findings. These findings, or evidence, then prove or disprove the hypothesis. The key take-away is that multiple people come to the same conclusion after multiple experiments. The problem with the “regular-ass person” coming to a conclusion based simply upon observation is it is open to subjective interpretations of the evidence and several logical fallacies (e.g., post hoc ergo propter hoc). This rejection of intellectualism displayed by the poster is a danger to America’s future prosperity.

Tons of people call tech support daily and starting shouting matches with the support because they think they know better. It nearly drove me insane on my first job.
