I’m Finnish, I was once talking in (direct translation here) society-Ed, and mentioned I’d be really damn satisfied if I could make a 40k salary when I got out of college. A kid (a rich kid, everyone present is a rich kid since the school’s in a rich neighborhood) piped up and said “40k? That’s poverty lol”

Poverty my ass, my peers are sometimes so out of touch with reality

I’m Finnish, and wtf is this?

No, charging fees for tuition is not illegal. We do have private schools here which do charge tuition, though they mostly are ”international” schools. Though, one difference is that the schools must be not-for-profit.

And yes, rich kids do go to them, or move to richer areas where the public schools generally perform somewhat better - mostly due to the fact that kids from richer families have more motivation for studying than kids from poorer families.

Someone in the comments suggested that rich people could donate to the public schools. No, they can’t. The state and it’s organizations (cities, and thus public schools) can’t get a permit for collecting money.

This is straight up a false claim. Finland has tuition fees for private institutions and for students from outside EU/ETA in public universities. Luckily only public universities are allowed to give university level degrees here, but you can still pay to get bachelors in some fields.
