Fatigue is a hell of a drug. First of all, congrats on the weight drop! If you have had that seat through the journey, it has been being stressed despite not reaching maximum load. Each use would add to that, and unfortunately now is when the fatigue reached the tipping point- even as you're further still from the max load.
Especially if the joint was using a hard, brittle glue, or if the wood was a bit flaky so the glue couldn't get a good bond.
